What is the Graston Technique?

February 13, 2018 By Megan Amneus

Benefits of Graston Technique:

What are the benefits of your physical therapist using a giant butter knife? Many! We will explain them below.

Introduction to Graston:

A specially trained medical professional performs the Graston technique with a specifically designed metal tool to focus pressure on the areas that need it most.

Graston is a specific type of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, which is used to treat soft tissue problems in non-invasive and effective ways. Graston Technique is used best in conjunction with exercises and stretches as directed by your physical therapist.

What Graston Technique Does:

When your physical therapist uses a Graston tool on you, they can focus the pressure they are applying with the tool on the areas that need it most. Small amounts of pressure on scar tissue or other damaged  tissues can help trigger the healing process to start. When the body directs it’s healing efforts to scar tissue it can often help remove and reabsorb it, to allow healthy strong tissue to grow in it’s place.

Who Is Graston For?

The Graston technique can help patients find pain relief, encourages appropriate muscle usage, and more rapid healing of tissues. A wide range of patients can benefit from the Graston technique, including:

  • Medial/Lateral Epicondylitis
  • Neck Pain
  • Plantar Fascitis
  • Rotatory Cuff Tendinitis
  • Patellar Tendinitis
  • Tibialis Posterior Tendinitis
  • Heel Pain/Achilles Tendinitis
  • DeQuervain’s Syndrome
  • Post-surgical and Traumatic Scars
  • Myofascial Pain and Restrictions
  • Musculoskeletal Imbalances
  • Chronic Joint Swelling Associated with Sprains and Strains
  • Ligament Sprains
  • Muscle Strains
  • Non-acute Bursitits
  • Back Pain
  • Trigger Finger
  • Hip Pain and Replacements
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Shin Splints
  • Chronic Ankle Sprains
  • Acute Ankle Sprains

Start healing and helping your body repair itself- by asking your therapist if the Graston Technique is right for you!
