My colleague Gage Permar, DPT wrote an article titled Alleviate Sciatica in Ten Minutes recently about sciatica. He does a good job of explaining what sciatica is and offers a self treatment option. This particular way of treating low back pain is based on a system by the McKenzie Institute. What I like about this article and the treatment approach is that you are able to treat your own symptoms quickly and simply. I would also add one more exercise as a possible alternative. Below is another way to relieve sciatica and centralize your symptoms. I would start with the exercise that Gage describes. If you are not able to tolerate it or if it is too inconvenient to lay down, the below exercise is another great option. You should positioned so that the wall is on the side opposite of your leg pain.
The important thing is that you perform the exercise often and that the exercise is pain-free. If your symptoms do not improve, it is important to seek the help of a medical professional. Also if you have more severe nerve symptoms such as pronounced leg weakness or bowel/bladder disturbances it is important to consult with a physician.
If your sciatica is not relieved by this sort of treatment, you should visit Siskiyou Physical Therapy for other treatment options and exercises that would be helpful.
