Health Benefits of *;#!*@# Swearing

January 26, 2018 By Megan Amneus

Contrary to what your mother once told you,

Swearing can actually be a healthy thing, according to an article by Psychology Today. Swearing is taboo no matter what culture you may belong to, but here we provide you with a few key reasons to say those expletives rather than holding them back.

Cursing may give you pain relief:

Research suggests that swearing can trigger our body’s fight or flight response, and give us mild pain relief. This extra jolt of energy when we are scared allows us run our fastest, and it turns out that swearing occasionally can do a similar thing!

Swearing Gives You a Sense of Power:

Using curse words in an extremely frustrating situation can help us feel a sense of control when we might otherwise be helpless. Cursing at someone proves to yourself that you are not just a bystander, and this can psychologically give us a confidence boost.

Cursing is a Non-violent Outlet for Anger:

It isn’t appropriate to lash out physically at someone, but in some cases we just need some sort of outlet- and swearing can provide that without unnecessarily escalating  things to a dangerous place.

Swearing is Funny:

In certain situations swearing can lighten up serious situations and make us laugh. Laughter is a powerful tool that helps brighten our lives, and among friends a well placed expletive can make a tough day bearable.

Cursing Brings Us Together:

Remember being a teenager and saying all the things that your friends did, in order to feel like one of the cool kids? Even as adults using curse words indicates we are comfortable with our friends and trust them.

Swearing Allows Us to Express Ourselves:

When we swear, we can emphasize the things that are really important to us by expressing them with colorful language. Swearing also allows us to liven up our speech and give it that extra punch that lets others know we feel passionately about something.

Physical and Psychological Benefits:

Swearing has been shown to increase circulation, elevate endorphin levels, and create a sense of calm and control. Swearing can act as a helpful tool in our lives, but the important thing to remember is to not use it too frequently because it can lessen the potential helpful effects (and might be viewed as rude!).

So let those curses rip, but be aware of the company you are in, and don’t do it too often!
