What is Plantar Fasciitis?
One of the most common problems that we deal with in the clinic is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the the tissues on the bottom side of the foot. The bottom of our feet are covered with connective tissue that runs from the heel bone to our toes. This fascia provides support and allows us to maintain the natural arch of the foot. There are several reasons why the fascia on the underside of our feet can get inflamed. Some of the reasons include excessive pronation (or foot flattening), tight calf muscles or simply from overuse. One of the classic signs of plantar fasciitis is severe pain with the first few steps of the day. Significant pain or tenderness along the bottom of your foot is another sign of plantar fasciitis.
The good news is that plantar fasciitis is something Physical Therapy can help with immensely.
We have several great tools for decreasing the inflammation in the fascia. More importantly we are able to address the problems that caused the plantar fasciitis in the first place. One of the common dysfunctions that causes plantar fasciitis is calf (lower leg) tightness. People are often prescribed generic calf stretches which usually help. However, there are times when exercises need to be modified or a patient’s pain level is such that they are unable to tolerate stretching. Also, the foot pain may be caused by some other mechanism. When the plantar fasciitis has a more complex mechanism physical therapy is especially helpful. We able to problem solve with patient to find solutions.
